Workshop: Development of Maintenance Skills through Education and Training, Qualification and Assessments

Workshop instructor: Guido Walt (CH)

The role of standards is under-estimated: Standards are the scaffolding for developing Management approaches. Maintenance Management software, TPM, RCM, FMECA and other products or techniques are tools for supporting the Maintenance Management approach.
Maintenance means leadership and communication on all levels. The qualification of maintenance personnel has to be implemented in such a way that the top-down as well as bottom-up information is effective.
Qualifications and assessments allow taking responsibility in the frame of Integrity Management. Integrity Management includes Quality- and Safety Management, Environment and Social Responsibility.

COURSE CONTENT:
- Importance of maintenance, Terminology – Definitions
- Life Cycle Aspects
- Maintenance Objectives
- Responsibility of Maintenance
- Maintenance Process
- Maintenance Support - Resource Management - Sub-Contracting
- Measurement, Analysis, Improvements and Repair
- Continuous Improvement, TnPM
- Safety and Environment.

Welcome message from Mrs. Eli Sivertsen, head of material sciences.

Mrs. Sivertsen: Visual Management based on FMECA is our key for improving maintenance quality - through
- Competence and Training
- No safety critical equipment failures
- No production losses.

Competence and Training:
Practical people are trained in failure mode analysis.

Criticality:
Criticality factors are analysed in a bottom up approach - first the equipment then the whole plant.

Production losses:
Integrated Operations is the key word for success:
Collaboration across bounderies and real time monitoring allow safe and fast decision making.

Responsibility, Quality and Maintenance in the Healthcare Sector

Maintenance is a key factor in the frame of quality management in hospitals.
30 to 50 % of hospital costs are "Non Quality costs".
For reducing "Non Quality Costs", a good maintenance culture can have an important impact.
Quality means:
- Cleanliness
- Maintenance of structure
- Maintenance of buildings
- Maintenance of equipments, including calibration
- Perfect sterilization
- Intelligent purchasing and outsourcing.
Medical and non-medical factors have an influence on the feeling of the patient.

Quality assurance is not enough - Quality Management is needed.
Quality Management includes training, public sector skills, customer related services, team building, continuous improvement, etc.

Beat Jenni: Quality of training and education

  • Advantages for the participants
  • Efficiency of the training
  • Best practice
  • Understandable training sequences

The training processes have to be managed: The trainer is architect and coach of the training.

Urs Mathys: Didactics and expertise

Training is based on profile and qualification. Corresponding programs are necessary.
The profile / needs of expertise can be described by the following six training steps:

  • K1 to know
  • K2 to understand
  • K3 to apply
  • K4 to analyze
  • K5 to synthesize
  • K6 to assess

Didactics, an important tool for improving attractiveness of the learning process.

Dr. Urs Guggenbühl and Ueli Rhiner, University of applied sciences St. Gallen: Innovation

Innovation is nothing new for Switzerland. The challenge is to ensure that we remain innovators, continually seeking new solutions.
Good innovations should consider the needs of all stakeholders. Acceptance and sustainability will be the result.
